There are a lot of different skin concerns that we deal with; acne, acne scars, redness, hyper-pigmentation, dark spots, wrinkles and more. Every person has different needs for their skin. For example, when you are dealing with acne, you need to use acne-fighting skincare products with ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. For me, I tend to struggle with redness because I use acne creams often in my skincare routine, so in this article, I will share with you guys how to calm irritated and redness-prone skin with this Must-Haves Soothing Ingredients.
What are the ingredients you should focus on using in your routine when you are dealing with this specific skin issue?
-
ALLANTOIN
This ingredient is often overlooked and doesn’t get the spotlight and praise it deserves. Allantoin is a substance that occurs naturally in our body, but it can also be extracted from plants (commonly comfrey plant) or made synthetically. It has anti-inflammatory properties and acts as an emollient that helps keep the skin moisturized and prevents irritation. It also helps in improving the skin’s natural barrier. Additionally, allantoin is able to shed the outer layer of the epidermis while treating the skin, so this ingredient gently exfoliates and hydrates at the same time. Isn’t it wonderful? This is overall a great, versatile ingredient for the skin!

PANTHENOL
Also known as provitamin B5, panthenol is best known for its ability to attract and retain moisture for the skin. Not only that, research has shown that panthenol helps to promote wound healing and of course, is great for irritated skin as it is very soothing and often used in sunburn treatment products. It helps to reduce inflammation, itchiness and irritation while promoting skin recovery.

GREEN TEA
Green tea, or also known as Camellia Sinensis, is not only beneficial when consumed orally, but is also remarkably wonderful when applied topically. Best known for its rich nutrients and anti-oxidant properties, it helps tremendously in fighting free radicals. Thanks to its soothing properties, green tea keeps skin issues like acne, rosacea and psoriasis at bay. It is also great in reducing redness and skin irritation. Not only that, green tea can also control sebum production which makes this a wonderful ingredient for those with oily, acne-prone skin like mine.
Ah, where should I start… Centella asiatica, or known as pegaga in Malay, took the skincare world by storm last year. It is hyped for many reasons as studies have shown that it offers amazing benefits to the skin. A fantastic herb that grows primarily in Asia, Centella is rich in amino acids and has potent anti-oxidant properties. There is also research showing that Centella is highly effective in soothing irritation and redness. Centella contains saponins, an active constituent which helps to calm down inflammation and speed up wound healing. This ingredient is especially great for those who suffer from acne, eczema and psoriasis, and it is personally one of my favorites and go-to ingredients whenever my skin feels irritated and sensitized.

ALOE VERA
Aloe vera, or aloe barbadenis, is very popular and well known in the skincare industry. Some people acclaimed this ingredient as their Holy Grail and the answer to every problem for their skin. While I do not 100% agree on that, I do love this ingredient as it has decent hydrating properties and offers an even greater soothing effect to the skin. It provides a refreshing and cooling sensation to the skin and for that very reason, it serves as a great after sun care ingredient. People love to use this whenever they get a sunburn after long hours of sun exposure.
These ingredients are quite commonly used in skincare products, especially in Asian skincare. Soothing ingredients such as the ones mentioned generally work well for most skin types, but make sure you know your skin can tolerate these ingredients before slathering them on. You know your skin best, so make sure you only feed it with what it loves!
